Arthritis

What is Arthritis?

“Arthritis” comes from the Greek word meaning “inflamed joint”. There are many different conditions that would fall into the category of Arthritis. One hundred different kinds, to be exact, and one in seven persons suffer from some form of Arthritis. Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease whereby the body, for some unknown reason, attacks its own joint tissue. It can occur at any time of your life, from youth to senior. Osteoarthritis is the most common condition and is considered to be the “wear-and-tear” arthritis.  It can generally affect you later in life depending on how active your lifestyle is and how many injuries that you incur.

What can Massage Therapy and Acupuncture do for Arthritis?

Many people living with arthritis are prescribed high doses of pain killers including opioids such as Demerol and OxyContin or tranquilizers and sedatives such as Valium, Ativan or Xanax. These medications are habit forming and might lead to addiction and abuse and harm your health in the long run. Massage Therapy and Acupuncture might be acceptable alternative or complements to conventional medical care for arthritis. They won’t cure arthritis; however these treatments can help with pain management, swelling and stiffness. Medical acupuncture is a practice of inserting thin sterile needles into specific body points to improve health and well-being. According to recent studies, stimulation of acupuncture points produces a cascade of chemicals and leads to release of endorphins and enkephalins, the body’s natural pain killers. Acupuncture treatments work well for knee, wrist, hand, foot and ankle arthritis.

During both massage therapy and acupuncture, the focus of the treatment is to relieve the compressive forces on the joint by using techniques within the client’s pain tolerance to reduce stiffness, pain, swelling, spasm and to increase the overall range of motion of the affected joints and the muscles surrounding it. Joint play techniques can also be applied directly to the joint to increase lubrication which could, in turn, help to increase nutrition of the cartilage. Any other areas of the body that are compensating for the pain can be addressed as well as any postural concerns or dysfunctions. Your therapist can give you homecare advice such as specific exercises, hydrotherapy or stretches to prolong the effects of your massage and acupuncture as well as to reduce your overall pain on a daily basis.

Hot wax during arthritis treatment?

Several layers of melted paraffin wax can be applied to hands, feet or other parts of the body and are covered with plastic sheets and towels. The wax is then peeled off after 30 minutes. The deep penetrating heat from the wax increases blood circulation and softens collagen of connective tissue in preparation for massage or acupuncture.  It also softens dry, cracked skin and decreases pain from stiffened or spastic muscles and joints. It is a great addition to your treatment.

Creams can be used to relieve pain as well. Your therapist could use Capsaicin creams which are the natural substance that gives the heat in hot peppers.  These creams can be effective if applied locally. Other muscle creams such as “Ultimate Pain Rub” containing Methyl Salicylate, Menthol and Camphor could also be considered.

The rituals continue!

The rituals continue!

It is an annual ritual we cannot escape as we are continuously bombarded by ads in flyers, newspapers, TV and radio as well as in our favourite stores, reminding us that school is starting soon and that we need to get ready for it. But amongst all that cacophony of sales and other bargains, it is sometimes difficult to remember that summer is not quite over yet.

While there is no denying that fall is in the air, we are still trying to cling to the last days of summer bliss while enjoying the harvest from our gardens or relaxing amongst the flowers we had planted last spring, perusing the various farmers’ markets for fresh fruits and vegetables or for that choice cut of meat to throw on the barbeque, or perhaps to take advantage of the sun’s rays at the beach or the cottage before it is too late.

And as we regale in what nature has to offer, we sometimes neglect our health and beauty, especially in light of the stress of getting the kids, and ourselves, back into working mode.

Take a deep breath!

In fact, take several deep breaths, ideally by first getting into a relaxed position, placing your hands on your belly and by breathing in slowly and deeply through the nose, allowing your belly to rise, then by slowly exhaling through the mouth in a controlled manner, repeating the whole procedure 8 to 10 times.

But sometimes, breathing is not enough and you’ll need Massage Therapy or Acupuncture to deal with stress and the nasty pitfalls of chronic, prolonged stress that may lead to various health problems including; headaches and migraines, muscle soreness and tightness, insomnia, anxiety attacks, even depression, weakening of the immune system, and high blood pressure. Massage therapy or acupuncture performed by our registered therapists at Myoflex Massage & Rejuvenation Clinic can help decrease muscular tensions and harmonize the response of the body’s nervous system, promoting relaxation, reducing pain or boosting the immune system.

And after your health has been taken care of, our aesthetician Jennifer can take care of your beauty needs and leave you radiant and ready to face the world.

Was your face exposed to too much sun and do your eyebrows need to be redefined? A facial and tinting may be what you need.
Are you feeling a tad prickly? Jennifer can take care of all your waxing needs and desires.
Are your toenails dishevelled from all that sand and saltwater and do your fingernails show signs of neglect and are in dire need of some special care? A pedicure and manicure will get them into shape again. And you may even want to get fancy by choosing from a vast assortment of nail decorations, from whimsical to formal.
Did you let the sun colour your skin in a golden hew or did you avoid its rays to keep your diaphanous complexion? Regardless of your skin’s shades, Body Art, the non-permanent alternative to a tattoo, can bring you to that next level of sophistication. Let Jennifer guide you through the wide variety of designs to make it fit your particular occasion. Whether it is an official reception, maybe your upcoming vacation, or for going back to school or the office, or even for your next BBQ, Body Art can add that extra touch of class.

And don’t forget about Venus Freeze, the revolutionary, non-surgical and pain-free treatment for your face, neck or body to reduce wrinkles, tighten skin and contour your body.

Summer Activities

Summer Activities

Summer is here, the sun is out, the weather is warm and outdoor activities beckon. Whether you want to test your green thumb, challenge the road on your bicycle, brave the waves, hit the fairways or just lounge on the beach or the cottage, there are some things you should always keep in mind.

-         Make sure to keep hydrated, but avoid alcoholic beverages, soft drinks or coffee. Choose fruit juices without any added sugar and beverages that replace electrolytes lost through sweating.
-         Before any physical activity, make sure to warm up properly and to stretch. Even in hot weather, your muscles need to be brought up to full capacity gradually. Our therapists will be happy to show you a few stretches appropriate to your type of activity.
-         Avoid exercising during the hottest times of the day.
-         Summer time is abundant with fresh fruit, so take advantage of it and have some fruit at hand for a little snack here and there. If you are concerned about pesticides on your produce, head to your local farmer’s market or buy organic at your favourite grocery store.

-         Another snack alternative are nuts, so next time you feel a bit peckish, instead of reaching for that chocolate bar, munch on some nuts; like walnuts, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, or almonds, containing more fibre than any other nut and are loaded with vitamin E, to just name a few!.

Foot Pain and Massage or Acupuncture

Foot Pain and Massage or Acupuncture

Warmer weather encourages activities such as walking and running; and while exercise has its benefits, it may sometimes produce foot discomfort and pain due to a condition called Plantar Fasciitis.

The plantar fascia is a structure that runs from the front of the heel bone to the ball of the foot and helps to support the longitudinal arch of the foot during walking.

As we age there is a decrease in the fat pad that covers the heel which causes irritation of the small nerves that travel under the plantar fascia.

Obesity or a sudden increase of body weight, a tight Achilles tendon, improper footwear, change in the frequency or the way you walk or run, or an occupation where you stand on your feet for several hours on hard surfaces, may all cause plantar fasciitis.

Though plantar fasciitis may, in rare cases, be caused by a heel spur, the main cause is a chronic inflammation of the fascia as it attaches to the heel.

Symptoms include pain, generally located in the centre or the inner side of the bottom of the foot, mostly close to the heel.

Treatment may include realigning the foot as it goes through the gait cycle by adjusting the footwear or introducing custom made orthotics to support the arch and reduce pressure. Use of ice, for 10 -15 minutes, to decrease the inflammation after prolonged standing or exercise, and the use of heat in the morning to release restrictions may be beneficial.

Stretching of the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon as well as strengthening of the foot and leg muscles may bring relief. Wearing a slightly elevated heel on your shoes or using a heel pad may also help.

If you have a leg length difference use a heel lift, avoid hard surfaces, and lose weight if you are overweight.

Book an appointment with your massage therapist or acupuncturist to treat the foot pain and discomfort. Paraffin wax, friction therapy and muscle stripping, as well as cupping, are generally used to break up the adhesions and may all be a part of your therapeutic massage session.

This article should not be used to diagnose, it is only for educational purposes. If you have any of these signs or symptoms you should consult your health practitioner for a proper assessment.

Drugless Back Pain Treatments

Drugless Back Pain Treatments

Back pain is one of the most frequent complaints with approximately 90 % of adults experiencing back pain at some point in their lives. In rare cases back pain can be caused by cancer, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis or a herniated disc in the spinal column. However, most cases of back pain are caused by functional and postural imbalances due to the involvement of muscles, fascia and ligaments, generally referred to as soft tissues. Prolonged sitting at the desk and computer, lifting heavy objects without proper technique, or repetitive movements can all contribute to back stiffness and eventually pain.

Massage Therapy combined with Acupuncture and Exercise Programs can reduce the level and frequency of back pain.

Here is a brief description of what to expect during your treatment:

The treatment usually starts with a moist heat application, followed with gentle stretching (myofascial release) of the back and leg muscles, and massage. The session may also include acupuncture, which involves the insertion of small sterile needles along the spine, as well as in the buttock and leg muscles. To achieve stronger stimulation, the needles are left for 15 to 20 minutes.

Acupuncture and massage are great tools in managing back pain by stimulating blood circulation, releasing muscle spasms and increasing levels of natural pain killers.

In order to provide extended soft tissue manipulation and improve blood and lymph circulation, a special tape (Kinesiotape) is applied to the back muscles. This tape provides support without restricting the body’s movement and is effective for 4-5 days.

At the end of the treatment a program of stretching and strengthening exercises, tailored to the patient’s needs, is given as home care.
